ExpressVPN is a fantastic choice for protecting your online activity and accessing content from different regions on Roku. It uses AES-256 encryption and can bypass geo-restrictions imposed by apps like Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, etc. By default, Roku devices don’t support VPN apps, so they can’t be installed by any means. Instead, create an ExpressVPN profile on your router and then connect your Roku TV to a wireless network. This guide explains the entire process in two sections to set up a VPN connection without complications.
Install ExpressVPN Firmware on the Router
1. Open a browser on your PC and visit (expressvpn.com/setup#router).
2. Sign in with your ExpressVPN account, choose your Asus router’s model, and click Download Firmware.
Note: Keep the ExpressVPN webpage open; you will need the activation code for the setup later.
3. Type router.asus.com or 192.168.1.1. Enter your Asus router’s credentials and tap Sign In.
4. On the sidebar, click Administration and select the Firmware Upgrade option.
5. Click Upload and select the ExpressVPN firmware (.trx file) you downloaded earlier.
6. Once completed, it will show, “Firmware upgrade is done. Please reboot (your Asus router model) manually.” This confirms that the ExpressVPN firmware is installed on your Asus router.
Connect Roku to ExpressVPN via Asus Router
1. Open a new tab on your PC browser and visit router.asus.com. Tap VPN from the sidebar, and select VPN Client.
2. Click Add profile and select OpenVPN. Enter ExpressVPN in the description. Click Choose File. Here, you have to import the ExpressVPN credentials.
3. Switch to a new tab, visit the ExpressVPN website, and log in to your account. Tap Setup, choose Manual Configuration, and select OpenVPN in the right pane.
4. Copy the username and password that you have to use for router configuration.
5. Go below the setup section and select the server location you want to connect to. Upon selection, click Save to download the respective file.
Note: Rename it as ExpressVPN Config for easy understanding.
6. Switch to the previous Asus router webpage. Click Choose File and upload the (.ovpn file) you have saved. If the file is uploaded, you can see a Complete message. Click OK.
7. Tap Activate to establish an encrypted connection. A blue tick will appear if the connection is active.
8. Go to settings on your Roku device and connect it to the WiFi of the Asus router.
Roku users can now unblock streaming content from the selected server location without restrictions. To switch to a new server, you must set up a profile and import the corresponding server’s configuration file.
