Using the apps for a long time without a software update might cause technical issues. The app might crash, freeze, or not respond to your commands properly. If you’re in this situation, it’s better to update the malfunctioning app on your Roku device to fix the error.
How to Update Apps on Roku Directly
- Initially, connect your Roku to a stable WiFi network.
- Go to its Home screen and get to the channels section.
- Navigate to the app you want to update and highlight it.
- Press the Asterisk (*) button on your remote.
- In the following App info screen, click on Check for updates.
- If there are any updates, your Roku device will search for and update the app on your Roku device.
How to Update Apps Via the Roku App
If you don’t have the Roku remote with you, then use the Roku remote app to perform the app update.
- Install the Roku Mobile App from the Google Play Store/App Store.
- Sign in to your Roku account and click on Devices from the home menu.
- Select Channels and go to the Channels list.
- Click on the channel you want and select Update to update the respective app.
How to Update Apps by Updating the Firmware
Besides updating the apps manually, you can also update the Roku firmware to update the built-in apps automatically.
- Go to Roku Settings using the remote control.
- Click on System and choose System Update.
- Tap on Check Now, and your Roku device will look for available Firmware updates.
- If there are any available updates, it will show its latest version.
- Now, click Update and update your Roku device’s new firmware. This will update all the apps on your Roku as well.

If you are unable to update the app on your Roku, try out the below solutions.
- Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
- Check if there are any updates for the app.
- Try restarting your Roku device and the WIFI router to which it is connected.
- Clear cache files on your Roku.
- Uninstall the outdated app on Roku. Then, install it again to get the latest version of the app.
- Factory reset your Roku and start from scratch.
