The latest update to Roku OS 13 has left many Roku users annoyed, as it has unintentionally enabled Action Smoothing without an option to turn it off. This problem has been encountered by worldwide Roku users after the update on June 6.
The new update introduces a feature called Roku Smart Picture, which automatically enhances the picture quality as per the streaming content. However, it got way mixed up by enabling the Motion/Action Smoothing feature across all content and being unable to turn it off.
Roku’s Motion Smoothing or Action Smoothing is designed to insert additional frames to reduce the blur effect during a fast-moving screen. However, it is not popular among viewers who prefer a traditional cinematic and original frame rate picture quality. This feature can make high-definition content appear overly realistic, creating the Soap Opera effect that many find undesirable.
For those affected, several potential temporary solutions have been suggested:
- Regularly check for new updates from Roku that might bring up a new update to fix the issue.
- Apart from picture settings, experiment with different picture modes. Such as Movies, Games, or Standard to see if any reduce or Eliminate the motion smoothing effect.
- As a temporary measure, use an external streaming device like Apple TV, Fire Stick, or Chromecast to bypass the internal Roku software.
- Report the issue to Roku’s support center with detailed information about the TV model and the problems experienced.
These techniques may help mitigate the problem temporarily until you get the fix from Roku.
